ODE TO ARLENE
by Sylvia Negron
I wrote my first poem
at the age of nine.
and started the tradition
of making words rhyme.
Poems are inspired
by love, of course,
and back then I wrote
of the beloved horse.
In these few words
I hope to express,
our love for Arlene
as she's laid to rest.
So many memories
are brought to mind
that it's hard to select
just a few, I find.
My very first memory
was when I was just eight,
and insisted, that at one,
I could carry her weight.
Though duly warned
that she loved to bite,
I picked her up
and held on tight.
Our bond has always
been close, you see.
for Arlene, literally,
cut her teeth on me.
And like with a turtle,
I began to wonder
if before she turned loose,
it would have to thunder.
Her illness was slow
to assert itself.
She even started first grade
before her health became bereft.
Over the years,
words can't describe,
her life resembled
A roller coaster ride.
At times going well,
then taking a plunge,
all the doctors predicted
she would only die young.
But they reckoned without
her enormous will,
her love of Jesus
And the faith He instills.
Above all, she loved people
and life itself,
totally refusing
to be put on a shelf.
No matter the day
or even the times,
each time you saw her,
she was dressed to the nines.
But her role as Cinderella
was the grandest of all,
riding in her coach
and dressed for the ball.
Down the streets of Macon
With cold temperatures extreme,
she rode and reigned
like royalty supreme.
Queen Elizabeth never had
a more dazzling procession
Than Arlene in her ride
in the Cherry Blossom Festival.
Excited to show you
something new,
she shared her all
before she was through.
And, now, she's residing
in the presence of the King
and soaking up Heaven
while the angels sing.
Saying hello to family
who've gone before,
waiting for the rest of us
to reach that shore.
And I know what she'll say.
She would always insist:
"Come here, Sylvia,
Let me show you this."
