Obituary of Michael Bernard Lewis
Michael B. Lewis passed away at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 2nd. He was 50 years old and a long-time resident of Barnesville, Ga.
Mr. Lewis was a native of Albany, Ga., where he graduated from Doughtery County High School in the class of 1991. He excelled in both basketball and football during high school and was elected senior class president. He continued his education in his hometown by attending Albany State University, graduating in the class of 1996. He was on ASU’s basketball team and received his bachelor’s degree in political science, and then his master’s degree in special education at Troy State University.
Mr. Lewis relocated to Barnesville when he married Kimberly, his wife of 17 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Barnesville where he helped in the youth Upward basketball program for the last several years. He also was assistant coach for the boys’ varsity basketball team at St. George’s Episcopal School in Milner over the past few years.
He was known and loved throughout the community for his giving heart and kind nature. His welcoming smile and kind eyes and his size alone made him a magnet for children and adults, which allowed him to teach and befriend hundreds of people throughout his life.
Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and his daughter, Maya Grace, both of Barnesville; son De’mon Brooks (Teresa) of Charlotte, N.C.; daughter Jayla Palmer of Atlanta, Ga.; and son Aaron Graham of Valdosta, Ga. His mother, Delores Fears of St. Louis, Mo., also survives, as does his sister, Shana Jones of St. Louis, Mo., and his father, Ben Lewis of Albany, Ga. Also surviving are several aunts and uncles and numerous nieces and nephews.
A family visitation will be on August 8th from 6-8 p.m. at Williams-Westbury Funeral Home in Barnesville. The Celebration of Life service will be on August 9th at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Barnesville. A 2nd Celebration of Life for Mr. Lewis will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023, at 12 Noon at The Greater 2nd Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia.
