Obituary of Emily Sullivan Brown
Mrs. Emily Sullivan Brown, age 81, of Barnesville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at Eternal Hope Hospice in Griffin, Georgia.
Emily was born on Thursday, October 2, 1941, in Barnesville to the late Zack and Martha Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, William H. Brown, Jr. Emily loved her family with a passion. She especially enjoyed caring for her three grandsons.
Emily graduated from Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville with a degree in Elementary Education. She continued her studies at West Georgia College in Carrollton and was awarded two advanced degrees. Emily was a teacher and administrator in the Cobb County School System for thirty years, during which she was honored with Teacher of the Year awards at Norton Park Elementary School and Russell Elementary Schools, Cobb County Teacher of the Year and State of Georgia semi-finalist Teacher of the Year. After her retirement Emily went on to one of her greatest accomplishments in teaching adult literacy. In that endeavor, she was recognized as a state of Georgia adult literacy winner. Along with her student, Lawrence, in his acceptance speech, Lawrence said, “I may never be president, but I can read!” Mrs. Brown had a gift for teaching children and adults how to read.
Emily married William H. Brown, Jr of Barnesville on April 14, 1961, with whom she had two children; William H. Brown III of Barnesville and daughter Amanda Brown Layne (Howard) of Greenville, Tennessee; she is survived by both children and grandsons; Jacob, Isaac and Abraham Brown; sisters, Ann Van Houten and the late (T.J.) of Burleson, Texas and Faye Walker (Bobby) of Barnesville.
A Memorial Service for Mrs. Emily Brown will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 2:00 P.M. at Fredonia Congregational Methodist Church in Barnesville with Pastor Ken Peeples officiating. Following the service, a reception will be held for friends to visit with family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Emily’s honor to Eternal Hope Hospice, 123 North 18th Street, Griffin, Georgia 30223.
