Alma Wood

Obituary of Alma T. Wood

Mrs. Alma Tanner Wood, 93, of Mountville, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015, at West Georgia Hospice LaGrange. Born October 16, 1921 in LaGrange, daughter of the late Thomas Dewitt Talmadge Tanner and Mary Harriet Barnes Tanner. She was a lifelong resident of Troup County, living most of her life in Mountville. Affectionately known as Miss Alma: she taught generations of young adults at Mountville United Methodist Church. Along with other ladies of the community Miss Alma helped establish the Mountville Community Club; a rural-urban organization designed to foster community pride and educate its members. She was the second employee of the Troup County Board of Tax Assessor’s, serving the citizens of Troup County for more than 30 years. As a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Ammie’ s greatest joy was family. The busiest room in her home was always the kitchen, where she shared meals and taught five generations her love for cooking. In her later years, at home with her family, she enjoyed gardening, reading and visiting with friends young and old. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Joel and Tammy Wood, daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Charles Newsome all of Mountville; grandchildren and their spouses, Valeri and Kirk Kirkwood, Jonathan and Casey Wood all of LaGrange; Jason and Jessica Newsome, Jodie and Robbie Maharrey all of Mountville; great-grandchildren, Skyler, Maddie, Tanner, Kevin, Katarina, Savannah, Ella, and Walker; sister, Lois Jeanette Sledge of LaGrange; several nieces and nephews, and her faithful cats, Batman and Candi. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas H. Wood, Jr. daughter, Harriett Ellen Wood, brothers and sisters, Robert Tanner, Harry Tanner, “Dick” Tanner, Nelder Hart, Mary McPeters , Mozelle Graley, Norma Pierson, Joyce Walters, and a special brother-in-law, Avery Sledge. Graveside services will be at 2:00 Tuesday at Mountville Cemetery with Jessica Newsome officiating. The family will be at her home and will receive friends at Hunter-Allen-Myhand Funeral Home Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00. In-lieu of flowers the family respectfully request that contributions be made in memory of Mrs. Alma Tanner Wood to Mountville United Methodist Church, or West Georgia Hospice LaGrange.
